Camden due to lose four from the Safer Neighbourhoods team
Camden Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Councillor Abdul Hai, today urged Deputy Mayor Kit Malthouse to reconsider plans to reduce the number of police Safer Neighbourhoods sergeants in the borough.
The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is proposing to reduce the number of sergeants in Camden from 18 to 14.
Although the number of PCs and PCSOs on each Safer Neighbourhoods team (SNT) will remain the same, some sergeants will be expected to run two teams.
Proposals from the MPS review of Safer Neighbourhoods are due to be discussed at the MPA strategic and operational policing committee on 16 June 2011.
In the letter to the Deputy Mayor of London and chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, Councillor Abdul Hai, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Camden Council, wrote:
“I was disappointed to learn that there is a plan to significantly reduce the number of SNT sergeants across London. In Camden the proposed reduction is from 18 to 14, which means that there will no longer be a dedicated sergeant for each ward based team. As you can imagine this proposal has already caused disquiet within local communities and a number of representatives have contacted me to register their concerns.
“These are concerns that I share. I have been closely involved with the delivery of crime reduction and community safety services in Camden for some time, and I am convinced of the value of frontline police services in this regard. The introduction of ward based Safer Neighbourhood Teams and the leadership that sergeants have provided has had a particularly successful impact in Camden, especially in terms of acting on the priorities set by local people.”
